About NAFELA
NAFELA is a name inspired by Old English roots for “navel,” or belly button, the symbolic center of something. For us, it represents California as the heart of the wine world. This region, blessed with abundant sunlight and a rich diversity of soils and microclimates, offers unmatched potential for crafting a wide range of expressive wine styles.
Our mission with NAFELA is to uncover and share the hidden gems of California winemaking and to showcase the true potential of this extraordinary wine country.
The label’s motif draws inspiration from Raijin, the Japanese god of thunder.
In Japanese folklore, Raijin is said to steal children’s belly buttons during thunderstorms. Parents often playfully warn their kids to cover their stomachs when thunder rumbles, a tradition rooted in both superstition and care.
“When thunder rolls, hide your belly button before Raijin steals it.”
